R2Ri is the only Wilderness Medical Society Partner headquartered in England and Wales and one of only two WMS Partners in the UK - the other being the Faculty of Pre Hospital Care, Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh).

// Prolonged Field Care

The R2Ri team are experienced remote area medics. The team includes those experienced in Prolonged field care from both military and civilian operations - whether terrestrial or ship board PFC experience, prolonged evacuations and more. The team also includes University lecturers and academics. We have combined the expertise of team members with Masters Degrees focusing on Prolonged Field and Nursing Care (now undertaking PhD's in Prolonged Field Care), with military and civilian experience.

We have developed two PFC courses:

  • PFC for Medics

  • PFC for non Medic expedition leaders.

Both courses are run over two days at the National Mountain Centre, Plas Y Brenin. Both courses involve pre reading, lectures and skill stations - before an overnight exercise, moving and caring for the patient in an outdoor setting, utilising telemedicine and more. The practical phase of the course concludes at lunch time of day 2, followed by hot showers, lunch and then a debrief.

The course is complemented by post course resources.

// REMPOCUS - Remote/ Expedition Medicine: Point of Care Ultrasound (TM)

The first in a series of Ultrasound courses to introduce the user to hand held Ultrasound equipment as an additional diagnostic and imaging device when operating in remote areas.

The Introduction to Pre-Hospital Trauma Ultrasound Course is ideal for Paramedics, Foundation and Core Training Doctors, and Trainee Practitioners interested in PHEM, who haven’t yet undergone formal ultrasound training. It’s also a fantastic refresher for clinicians who want to become more confident in their basic emergency ultrasound skills.

The course is aimed at remote area medical practitioners and is aimed at harnessing the rapidly evolving (and increasingly affordable) hand portable technologies available or emerging on to the market, providing another diagnostic tool for the remote area medic.

Topics Covered:

  • Introduction to portable Ultrasound

  • Care and charging for portable ultrasound in the field

  • Limitations

  • eFAST for detection of peritoneal free fluid,

pericardial fluid, tamponade, haemothorax, pneumothorax, and basic

    qualitative assessment of cardiac function.

  • Basic Physics and Knobology of Ultrasound

  • eFAST and test characteristics and exam limitations.

  • Clinical integration of ultrasound findings of the eFAST.

The course has had excellent reviews from remote area medics including a Consultant Radiologist expedition medic.
