Why is this important?
When we set up Remote Area Risk International, a omatter of months away from 10 years ago, our aim was to provide fit for purpose, professional level training. Necessarily this would include new courses/training where no solutions existed for the sectors we serve.
We had a clear, specific 10 years ago plan.
One aspect of that programme / plan was to develop a gold standard, professional level, multi modular, remote area medic programme, endorsed at the highest level, gold standard level, to set the benchmark for quality, standardised remote area medics.
One subject that needed addressing was the very obvious need for training in the Prolonged Field Care sphere, for the civilian expedition, fieldwork, ngo, humanitarian, SAR and disaster response sectors.
So, with an expert team of civilian, military, practitioner, academic and supporting SME’s, we set about to develop this course.
We set about creating this course c 7 years ago, with an expert panel - and have been delivering it ever since, to rave reviews.
What is the value of endorsement ?
Firstly, it independently validates this course, at the highest level available.
It is the only PFC course open to the public that is endorsed by FPHC RCS (Edin).
Secondly, it will support the continuation of our ground breaking non profit work.
In a unique sector first, over c. 6/7 years, , we have used any funds from this course to support medics from NGO’s / Humanitarian / Disaster Response/ SAR and other organisations who need these skills to assist others in remote, austere and wilderness locations across the globe. This way, we operate as a force multiplier.
We know the training works. We know it makes a difference. We get the field reports.
Our courses are professional level courses, with a course alumni going on to operate on every continent, in every environment. Civilian and military.
We don’t believe in marking our own home work - any establishment can write its own course and self accredit. Peer review, forensic review and audit, including challenge by those with highly relevant expertise and experience has a distinct value.
We did just that.
Endorsement by a specialist Faculty of a Royal College following a full theory and practical review process has a value.
Endorsement by the Faculty of Pre Hospital Care no less.
Long established, globally respected.
For years, the FPHC has set the standards in our sectors. It is their documents that are waved round as evidence of good practice in expeditionary medical fields.
This was a robust process. Not a request/payment for a CPD letter or a desktop exercise paper endorsement of a concept/list of subjects, but a detailed forensic examination of all materials, references, policies, equipment, attendance on the course and reviewing lectures, skill stations, overnight PFC scenario and indeed, our full course.
Everything was observed, challenged and was required to be evidenced.
Importantly, the assessment was undertaken by those with highly relevant contextual and extensive remote area medical experience in multiple contexts.
Why Prolonged Field Care?
There’s a history of where this course came from in the course page of our website. In short, where our clients operate, help may not be coming any time soon. It may be hours or days away. There was a very obvious gap in formal training, specifically for our sectors - no civilian, publicly available courses meaningfully covered it… so we set out to design and deliver it, along with highly appropriate collaborators, both civilian and otherwise.
The course is a stand alone course but also one of 6 modules on our globally unique, 6 module, (plus dentistry as an additional element), 16 day face to face, c 380 hour R/EMO:TE Medic Programme.
